Energy Saving Measures Planned for Council Homes

By Robert Wheeler

With energy costs soaring and the climate crisis looming, Runnymede Borough Council (RBC) is taking proactive steps to improve the energy efficiency of its housing stock.

A total of 169 council-owned homes in the district are set to undergo significant energy efficiency upgrades, including the installation of solar panels and external wall insulation, cavity wall insulation, and loft insulation. The council has allocated £1.28 million for this initiative, with an additional £1.25 million coming from central government grants.

These improvements are expected to yield substantial benefits for tenants, with potential annual savings of up to £750 per household. Moreover, the project is anticipated to reduce carbon emissions, alleviate fuel poverty, and create green jobs within the community.

“We are committed to supporting our residents during these challenging economic times,” said Mike Smith, chair of the council’s housing committee. “By investing in energy efficiency, we can not only help reduce household bills but also contribute to a more sustainable future.”

The council has confirmed that letters will be sent to affected tenants in the coming days, with work scheduled to commence in December. It’s important to note that the costs associated with these upgrades will be covered by tenant rent payments.
